The Taranaki Philatic
Society
had its first meeting on Friday 10th July 1936. It was held in the
lower room of the Workers Social Hall situated on the corner of
Courtenay Streety and Carrington Street, New Plymouth. The meeting was
called by Herbert Mullon (alias Simon Sam). "By courtesy of the
Manawatu Philatelic Society there will be a display of Exhibits from
the Philatelic Section of the recent Winter Show at Palmerston North" (Taranaki
Herald, Saturday July 4th 1936)
For the past
seventy years the Society has held monthly meetings at various
locations within New Plymouth. Members have also run four TARAPEX
national stamp exhibitions in 1969, 1986, 1998 and 2008.
Members
of the Taranaki
Philatelic Society
each concentrate on collecting a variety of stamps including: Burma,
Cats, Lighthouses, Magpie Moth Surcharges, Perfins, Taranaki Postmarks,
Red Cross, Rowland Hill, USA Revenue Stamps, World Airmails.
